New Displays at the Library

Kittie Wilkins, Heroes and Superheroes, Enemies of the Book, National Public Radio, Post Card Collections: Antique and Sunset, Edgar Guest: Poet of the People, and Here Comes the Sun are the new or continuing subjects of displays up in the library now. Daav Corbet has his art exhibited in the Current Display Art Area.

First Floor:

wilkinsDisplay case 1: Kittie Wilkins: Horse Queen of Idaho. Kitty Wilkins lived from 1857 to 1936. She was known as the Horse Queen of Idaho and spent many years on the Diamond Ranch in the Bruneau Valley in Owyhee County, Idaho. Read her exciting biography and see the interesting historical photos on this display. Philip Homan, Catalog Librarian, has been doing extensive research, writing, and speaking on Kittie Wilkins, and did this display.

HeroesHeroes and Superheros is the topic of display case 2. This display discusses and shows books related to heroes and superheroes. It includes a list “Why do Americans Love their Heroes and Heroines,” as well as books about heroes and some action figures.

bad booksDisplay Case 3 has a display on Enemies of Books. It includes information about the things that damage books, including fire, water, dust, gas & heat, neglect, collectors, bookworms, bookbinders, and more. It also discusses damage by dogs, water, cats, food, pens & pencils, insects, rodents, and ways to prevent it.

The nearby Current Display Art Area has work by Daav Corbet. See his bright and colorful paintings, abstract and natural themes. They will be up through the end of July, or later.

Second Floor:

NPRDisplay Case 4 has information on National Public Radio and KISU. It lists programs (entertainment, music, and news), includes names and photos of some of the voices of NPR, has a poster on the upcoming Art and Soul radio show, and more. Check the web sites of NPR and KISU for more information. If you’re a frequent NPR listener, you’ll want to check the new “You Know These NPR Voices–But What So They Look Like” page. You can also pick up a free sticker for your binder, car, window, etc. and a copy of the schedule of KISU radio.

post cardsA Post Card Collection: Antique Cards and Sunset Post Cards are the subject of display case 5. It has samples of many cards from places all over the United States. It includes articles on “Main Street Postcards As Muse”, “Postal Modern,” “Postcard Casts New Light on Hotel Bannock” and more. Three post card art prints of historical Pocatello by Robert Rush are featured in the center of this display. The post card themes include old cityscapes, parks, animals, people, and more. Some of the old ones look like watercolors.

Third Floor:

poetDisplay case 6 is on Edgar Guest: Poet of the People. Edgar Guest was Michigan’s poet laureate. For 30 years he wrote a poem a day in the Free Press. Come by and sample some of his cheerful poems.

sunHealth Science display caseHere Comes the Sun. This summer the IHSL will be doing a display on summer safety. This month their display will cover protecting yourself from sun damage and skin cancer with sunscreen and eye protection. You can find many articles about this important subject by checking with the Idaho Health Science Library, located on the 3rd floor of the library.
