Scope and Content

The Pocatello Chamber of Commerce Collection (MC009) comprises approximately seven linear feet and is housed in seventeen document boxes. The material was received in 1969 - 1970 and contains correspondence, subject files, minutes of meetings etc., which were maintained by the Chamber through 1964. The Chamber papers cover 1904 to 1965 with very scattered records in the early years. The most complete files are the Chamber minutes dating from 1948 to 1961, the Reclamation files and the business, financial and statistical files. Papers used in setting up books for companies interested in coming to Pocatello are included in these files.

According to the minutes of a regular meeting of the Pocatello Commercial Club (December 15, 1919), the Pocatello Chamber of Commerce was established November 20, 1905 with James Brady (later a U.S. Senator) as the Chamber's first President. In the early years it was referred to as the Commercial Club. (See book Pocatello - Idaho's Potential Metropolis and regular minutes of meetings of the Pocatello Chamber of Commerce, December 15, 1919).

The filing system, for the most part, has been retained as it was created. The files have been arranged alphabetically by subject and chronologically within each folder. The dates are inclusive but not necessarily complete. The Chamber files are in six series:

  1. Presidential Files
  2. Committee Meetings Minutes Correspondence 1924 - 1965
  3. Business, Financial and Statistical Files 1889 - 1963
  4. Subject Files
  5. Maps and Blueprints
  6. Miscellaneous Publications (Mainly Idaho) and News Clippings

Clippings, maps and blueprints have been placed in a separate series. The papers have been placed into acid free folders and a few documents in poor condition have been copied on acid free paper. Most photographs have been removed from the files to be placed in the appropriate collection in the Library Archives.
