O. R. Baum Collection-Table of Contents
MC038

Scope and Content

The O.R. Baum Collection was received by the Eli M. Oboler Library Special Collections Department from the estate of O.R. Baum via Grace Ellis (secretary to Ben Peterson, partner of O.R. Baum) on September 18, 1972. Following Baum's death in December 1970, several letters were exchanged between Sylvia Cline of the ISU Archives and representatives of Baum's estate concerning the papers before their eventual transfer.

The papers consist of .05 linear feet (1 small manuscript box) dealing almost exclusively with the 1925 trial of three members of the Shoshone-Bannock tribe (James Tisidimit, Elmer Whittenfone and Ben Ariwite) accused of murdering a fellow tribe member (James "Peanut" Deveney). Included are court transcripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The highlight of the trial was an appearance by Chief Tendoy, who read an address at the sentencing hearing. Several copies of the address are included.
