Scope and Content

Henry Thomas not only donated his manuscript collection to Idaho State University, but also donated nearly 2000 books to the university as well. (a list is provided in his finding aid)

The bulk of the Thomas Collection consists of personal correspondence and greeting cards. Mr. Thomas was of German descent and some of correspondence is written in German.

Mr. Thomas carried on a long-term correspondence with Dr. Roland W. Brown from the National Geographic and U.S. Geological Survey. He also corresponded with multiple universities about his rock, fossil, and botany collections.

The collection consists of 22 boxes. 12 boxes contain correspondence, 5 contain greeting cards, 3 contain bank statements and the others 2 contain memorabilia.

The Smithsonian and many others tried to buy his collections but they were willed to Idaho State University.
