Scope and Content
The Olinger Collection was brought into the Idaho State University Archives in 1995. This collection is divided into three areas. The first area is his personal writing in American History. A second area in the collection is primary and secondary material on Camp Downey. The collection ends with several items on Russian History.
This collection is one box five inches wide. It contains typed and copied materials.
The collection covers Nineteenth and Twentieth Century America plus Twentieth Century Russia. There is a short study on the two Olinger brothers in the Lincoln County War in New Mexico, and several items of Mr. Olinger's writings on the Conscientious Objector Camp at Downey, Idaho. The second part of this collection is secondary and primary sources used in his study of Conscientious Objection. It is divided into Mennonite and non-Mennonite information. At the end of the collection is a short book review on Radu Florescu and Raymond T. McNally's book, Dracula: A Biography of Vlad the Impaler 1431-1476. Some personal writing on modern figures in Russian History, Valentin Rasputin and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, are in the collection.
This collection is divided into three series. The first series, American History, is divided by century. A second series is the literature used to write Olinger's thesis at Utah State University and his book A Place of Conscience: Camp Downey. The third series covers Southeast European and Russian History.
Most of the material was written by Mr. Olinger in an academic setting. The one work created outside the academic scene is, The Image of Violence in the West, the study of the two Olinger brothers in New Mexico.

| 1973 | John received his BA in History from Fort Hays State College at Hays, Kansas. Three years later he received a MA from Fort Hays State in History. |

| 1976 - 1984 | Working as a permit agent for Petty-Ray Geophysical, Seismography Company. This work took him to Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, Kansas and Oklahoma. |

| 1987 | He received a MS in History from Utah State University. |

| 1987 - 1990 | Lived in Hugoton, Kansas |
|
| 1990 | Lives in Preston, Idaho where he works in the Franklin County Nursing Home. |
